Frequently Asked Questions

The STEM Writing Institute (SWI) offers writing workshops for STEM graduate students, faculty, and industry professionals who want to improve their writing. We offer virtual and custom writing workshops that vary in length and content, but each workshop provides clients with applicable writing lessons that will help them become effective writers and communications. SWI also offers one-on-one consultations to provide you with individualized feedback on a piece of your writing.

With an SWI writing workshop, you’ll gain invaluable knowledge about STEM writing genres and the writing process—from the organization and structure of your document to paragraph-, sentence-, and word-level construction. You’ll also equip yourself with concrete writing tools for future use. With one-on-one consultations you’ll receive writing feedback tailored to your specific needs as a writer.

Attending an SWI workshop will not only build your confidence as a writer but also introduce you to other professionals in your field that might lead to lasting friendships or a collaboration in the future!

All you need for the virtual SWI writing workshops is a computer and whatever you need to help you retain information (pen, paper, a blank page on your computer). For one-on-one consultations, you’ll need to provide an SWI Team Member with a draft of your writing at least 48 hours in advance so they can prepare their feedback prior to your consultation meeting.

The SWI writing workshops and one-on-one consultations offer writing instruction at the organization/structure level and at the paragraph, sentence, and word level. SWI’s goal is to help you become a more effective communicator, so our workshops and feedback focus on the writing lessons you need to help you achieve that goal. Therefore, we do not provide final editing and proofreading; however, we work with several excellent editing and proofreading companies that offer discounted rates for SWI participants.
